Someone purporting to be from Omaha Public Power district scammed an area resident out of money according to the Washington County Sheriff’s activity report for this past week. The utility says, in a news release, that several callers say more scammers are claiming to be from OPPD and using claims of a rate reduction, asking victims to press 1 on their phone, another scammer is using an 800 number with claims of discounts. The scammers are spoofing the OPPD phone number. The utility says the scammers are aggressive and are also using text messages and demanding that the victims use a cash app. Officials with OPPD strongly recommend not giving out financial information in a call you did not initiate, if you receive a questionable call or text, hang up and contact the utility directly if you have questions.
