Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., was born in January 1929. The Baptist minister was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He was a leader of non-violent demonstrations against segregation. He was assassinated in April of 1968.
Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed a measure in 1983 marking the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King, Junior Day.
Federal offices, Nebraska and Iowa state offices are closed to commemorate the birth of the civil rights leader. Washington County offices are closed.
Some area banks will be open for business, but transactions will be posted tomorrow.
DeSoto and Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuges are open in a fee free day, though the visitor’s center is closed.
